Microsoft gave negative answer to virus infected iPod - Mp4 Converter

Earlier this week, Apple confirmed that a small percentage of iPods shipped with the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod marketing, Greg Joswiak, commented "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it." According to InfoWorld, Microsoft wasn't overly happy with the comments.

Jonathan Poon, Microsoft's manager in charge of scanning the company's software products for viruses before they ship, responded with "It's not a matter of which platform the virus originated [on]. The fact that it's found on the portable player means that there's an issue with how the quality checks, specifically the content check, was done."

James Abram, who held the virus scanning position before Mr. Poon, told InfoWorld "The Apple iPod incident was not about Microsoft having a hardy operating system, it was all about security and process."

The implication is that it's okay for a company to ship an operating system with know virus and security issues, and the responsibility for keeping Windows-compatible products virus free falls on the shoulders of product manufacturers.

Mr. Abrams added that Microsoft is aware that it is developing products in a virus contaminated environment, but that the company takes measures to keep those viruses from reaching customers. "I released software in an environment surrounded by Windows machines. Many machines on the corporate network were infected," he said. "We never introduced a virus into the software in the release or manufacturing processes because we had a professional understanding of what it took to release what we were supposed to."

But Apple isn't backing down from its statement, and is defending its iPod manufacturing and quality control procedures. Mr. Joswiak commented "It was an exception to our process. We believe we have a good process and we're going forward."
